Workflow Occasionally Exceeds Activity Limit and Creates Multiple Duplicate Activities

On one of our more complex workflows for offboarding, we are seeing this issue SOMETIMES pop up where activities are being duplicated many times, 12 times in the screenshots below, for reasons unknown. We increased the activity count several times, and have it at 1000 now, but it just seems to keep duplicating until it hits the limit and then cancels everything, which is an audit hazard with offboarding.

We are not even sure where to look for this, and do not understand why it is doing this only SOMETIMES. Ideas? What might cause this looping behavior, and why not consistent? How even to begin troubleshooting?

I think we go it. This is one of those workflows that kind of looks like you dropped a box of spaghetti or pick-up sticks, and then you have to trace things. I think we have a loop back on a once-in-a-while condition, which explains both the looping and why its not all the time.

Wish there was a better way to trace the workflow when it gets large 🙂
