Metrics table is designed only for tacking the changes of incident. why are you looking for alternative solution? what's you business requirement?

Answer to your question, no other way you can do apart from metrics and audit table.

No, Metrics is the best and out-of-the-box (OOTB) method for tracking these types of changes. Building a custom solution will only increase the technical debt for your instance.

 not from top of mind - but why would you need another solution. Metrics would always be the preferred way.
