g_modal.showFields reference field slow loading / frozen "Searching..." in Workspace

Hi Community,
 
I am experiencing an issue where a reference field freezes or stays stuck indefinitely on a "Searching..." state inside a custom modal popup using the g_modal.showFields API within a Configurable Workspace.
 
The modal is launched from a UI Action. It features a dynamic Choice field populated by a GlideAjax response, followed by a Reference field pointing to the User (sys_user) table.
When the modal opens, the dropdown is rendered, but the user lookup field hangs and blocks the page UI thread.
 
Any guidance or examples of how to resolve this freeze would be greatly appreciated!
