How to calculate the sum of a variable in a mrvs and assign the value to a catalog item variable.

In particular I want to calculate the sum of the gift_amount_numbers_only variable entry(ies) on submission of the catalog item request, and assign the sum value to the gift_transactions_grand_total catalog item variable. The variable set name is donation_transaction_information.
I am very new to scripting and really need detailed assistance on how to accomplish this.
