When I have created an asset (ex. a powerfull laptop) and have deployed it as a server (multiple model categories).
Now I want to deploy it as an office computer, and would like to change the model category to Laptop.
How can I change the model category, because ServiceNow locks that field after the first creation.

yes sir..
I find it hard to figure out the way ServiceNow would like to handle this process.
If you retire a CI the you also retire the asset. However that does not work for us 😉

That's because of "Update Asset fields on change" ("AssetAndCISynchronizer").
Maybe you can add the condition that checks if the changed state is retired and not fire this BR.
And then we can start working on getting the remap of the model category to the CI work ??

Hi Jens,
I wouldn't bother with changing the Model Category of an Asset. While it does classify the Asset, from a technical standpoint, it doesn't do a whole lot after the creation of the CI from the Asset. If you really need to report on what the asset is doing operationally, you could just use the Class of the associated CI, which is more fluid. With a proactive process, your assets will have more general model categories than the CI would once it gets discovered in the environment.
That said, I don't recommend a Model Category for Laptop, either. This is better addressed as an attribute (form factor) on the Hardware Model table.

bsweetser thanks for the quick reply.
And as allways a very good input.
The reason I am considering a model category for laptops is a lot of our laptops have build in modems, and therefore has an IMEI number.
