How can I migrate a client from a dedicated instance to a shared instance (MSP)? And can I use domain separation (migration tool)?

Hi @EliaquimS

Yes, to move from a dedicated to a shared environment, you need to use the Domain Separation feature.

Based on my experience working with similar setups, the recommended approach is:

  1. Request a new instance from ServiceNow.

  2. Install the Domain Separation plugin.

  3. Begin moving the data one domain at a time into the new instance. This approach is the most manageable, as it allows you to control what data is moved, and to which domain it should belong.

However, let me be clear — Domain Separation is a heavy and complex setup. You'll need to carefully manage domain-specific data, visibility rules, and access controls.

My suggestion:

  • Plan everything on paper first — document your domain structure, access rules, data ownership, and visibility requirements.

  • Once you’ve clarified everything and finalized the open issues, proceed with the instance setup and migration.

Domain Migration Tool plugin

The Domain Migration Tool plugin (com.glide.domain.migration_tool) simplifies the task of moving a customer from a domain-separated environment to a more flexible dedicated instance. Customers may want to migrate to a separate instance to take greater advantage of the ServiceNow AI Platform capabilities. Although the Domain Separation plugin is installed, the data and process separation properties are turned off.

Good morning my friend, thanks for replying. The Domain Migration Tool plugin (com.glide.domain.migrationtool) simplifies the task of migrating a client from a domain-separated environment to a more flexible dedicated instance. It's in the documentation. What I want to know is the opposite: moving from a dedicated instance to an MSP. Creating a domain and migrating it to the Shared environment. Got it?
