Placeholder text in record producer

I would like to set placeholder text in a record producer reference field.   Is it possible to do this?     I don't want it to be a default value, but just grey placeholder text.

on an onload client script just check if that field is blank, if yes then populate that placeholder text, at the time of submit just check if the text is same then ignore it, else save it.
