Tracking domains as CIs

Has anyone setup recording/managing domain names for your organization within the CMDB? As a university, we have a lot of these and we want to look into tracking them and integrating them into the change management process.

I looked the other day and didn't immediately see a CI category for doing this. There is a category for IP networks, which we are starting to build out as a proof of concept, but I haven't seen anywhere that would accommodate domain names. Anyone?

It turns out that there is a "web site" table in the CMDB to track web sites/domains. I haven't dug into it enough to know how well it fits our full set of requirements.  I just stumbled across it the other day so I plan to look deeper into it soon.

The odd thing about this, given the long list of categories and modules in the CMDB, is that the module doesn't display in the CMDB/CI applications by default. I found the table just by searching through the cmdb_ci* tables.

More to come...

Thanks. This is a plus but it still doesn't give out of box capabilities which I am trying to gather but I guess with few modifications I could get this cmdb_ci_web_site table working for my requirements.

I am trying to tie up following combination of concepts as CI's into CMDB:

  • Registered network domain names
  • Certificates associated to those (cmdb_ci_certificate is now available
  • Business Services which are delivered through these websites
  • Business Applications which are the core of these services

If I'm understanding the CMDB data architecture correctly you should be able to do all of these things with OOB functions. There may be a few tweaks and modifications needed here and there but you should be able to do all of that.

Have you looked into the business services and applications part of the CMDB? And the relationships management aspects of it all? It may not be presented in an entirely intuitive way but I believe all the pieces are there.

I've only delved into the business services a bit, and it's pretty easy to make a mistake that you might have to walk back, but that's what personal developer instances are for. 🙂

Yes indeed, I was just hoping there would been more out of box features over this network domain subject.

Yes, and I have quite long experience around the subject, I worked for IT service provider for quite long time with SACM & CMDB responsibilities but now I am doing this for "in house"-purposes with many new elements.

Hello Earl,

Did you finalize a solution for tracking domains? Were you able to use the OOTB website table or did you have to customize the table to fit your needs. I am in a similar situation where we have hundreds of domains and a web site ci vs a domain ci are slightly different. For example there could be multiple web sites across several web servers using the same domain name.

I have found this link with a list of CMDB tables and its descriptions. Sharing in case someone find it useful: https://docs.servicenow.com/bundle/vancouver-servicenow-platform/page/product/configuration-manageme...
