Unable to archive related records

Hello!

So i'm working on archiving the entire CMDB of just under 1 million records. There are a few that we will be keeping which i will deal with in the filters. The issue we are facing is with the related records.

We have a 1:1 relationship, CI's to Assets. So when we archive a CI, we want to archive its related Asset as well. It seems as though no matter what settings i put into the archive map in the Archive Related Records tab, absolutely nothing happens to the related records. At one point I had a Reference Table Rule set which linked to another archive rule for the assets. Originally this made the matching asset records vanish from existence with no trace (i didnt check the logs.. oops!). The action was set to Archive but they vanished anyway. I ended up taking it off, kept Action to Archive, and tried different reference settings such as 'Configuration Item in Asset' and 'CI' but nothing i pick does anything at all to the related Assets.

Does anybody have any ideas as to what might be happening? I'm creating assets with related CI's and filtering them by 'Asset Tag is ABC123'. The record estimate drops to 1 which is perfect, but the logs only show it removing the CI not the Asset, searching for both reveals the same results with the Asset linking to the archived CI table.

Hi Michael,

Your 1:1 relationship is like on Assest table you have a reference field pointing to CIs table?

If that's the case I would expect archiving to work. If it's not there might be some other issues, and I would recommend you open an incident with ServiceNow support as we would need to check the logs further.

Regards,
Sergiu

Hello Sergiu,

Thank you for your response! Yes, for most CI's (at least the ones that matter) there is an Asset record tied to it. They both reference each other. With all of the testing i've done, it really seems like the Data Archive tool is broken. I've tested this in my companies Fuji environment and in my Geneva dev environment with the exact same results in both.

As you've said, I'll open a HI ticket and see if we can figure out what is going on. Thank you Sergiu!

Hi Michael,

I'm interested in knowing the end result.   I'm running into the same type issue.

Hello Sharon,

My apologies for the late response. We did contact ServiceNow and did not really gain much help there. I've personally determined that the tool is broken and the project team decided to export all of our records, completely clear the CMDB, then re-import records we needed to keep (so far we havent had to restore any of those old records).
