What do I need Taxonomy Layers for?

I am starting off to create our IT Portfolio. What is the benefit of creating different Taxonomy Layers? To me, it seems they are rather getting into my way. When I create a node on Layer 2 or 3, I always need to create a parent node - that would be by Layer 1 or 2, though (which does not work). Is it good enough to work with only one layer?

Thank you for the quick response! I did read this article before, but it does not answer the question of what I need those layers (containers) for. I would allocate all our services to different nodes, but do not understad the need for containers (and then having to allocate accordnigly). Especially cross-over services would belog to multiple containers.

Sharing your pain here. I don't understand the point..  did you ever find a solution?
