What is the purpose of cmdb_ci_appl class ? and what is the difference between Application and Software class

I have noticed quite a bit duplicate CIs in cmdb_ci_appl table (from discovery). Any idiea what is the purpose of this class ?
what exactly is the difference between Application and Software in servicenow classes.
