I'm wondering if we could use HAM features to model assets that are not typical IT estate. The idea would be to use the hardware asset class to describe different types of specialized laboratory equipment and to differentiate it by creating hardware product models for different types. After initial analysis of the laboratory equipment we are looking at more than 50 different types of equipment - this is definitely too much to create a custom class/table for every type. Additionally they have some non-computerized equipment like pipettes and we would like to use the Consumables table to describe this.
What are your experiences with building asset inventories for pharmaceutical laboratories? What tables/classes did you use to describe the equipment? Does anybody have some best-practices to share?

Although this does not answer your question on HAM, you might want to have a look at newLab, an app built by a ServiceNow Build partner called Keralia. It has several modules and one of them is for resource management, specifically for lab equipment. You can find it on the ServiceNow Store.

Nuvolo has developed an app called GxP Asset Management that is designed to provide Life Sciences companies with full asset management of their lab, manufacturing as well as other non-regulated assets that are all "hardware" as you describe. Nuvolo GAM is availble on the ServiceNow Store and I would be happy to give you more information about it if you like. Please email me at ethan.smith@nuvolo.com

To add more information on what Ethan said below. Nuvolo has experience working with the Life Sciences customer base and with the software validation processes.

ServiceNow came out with a new offering called Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) to complement both SW and HW asset management as it shifts outside of the traditional IT domain to other assets. Note: you do not need to have SW and/or HW asset management installed for it. The app does a lot such as:
- Enterprise orders and tasks
- Enterprise Workflows
- Enterprise model types
- Multi-component models and assets
- Enterprise Model classifications
- Enterprise model / asset attributes
but my recommendation to get started would be to turn on the foundational data model and use that instead of adding to the HW asset table. The FREE store app is here (it's created by ServiceNow).
You will most likely have to extend your enterprise model classes from the "Enterprise good model", but you are validated in your thinking. My only suggestion is moving off the HW tables and onto the enterprise data model tables provided in the store app for future proofing.
If you have additional questions -- I'd recommend a conversation with your client director to ask with the Enterprise Asset Management specialists about how to do this and the value proposition of Enterprise Asset Management.
