In the world of artificial intelligence, the evolution of workflows is transforming how companies operate. Within this landscape, ServiceNow is leading the revolution with the concept of Agentic AI, an approach that takes intelligent automation to a new level.

 

Now Assist vs. AI Agents

In technical documents, the term used for these capabilities is Now Assist, whereas in marketing and strategic communication, we use AI Agents to reinforce the brand and differentiate the concept.

 

The Phases of Agentic AI 

The advancement of automation follows an evolutionary trajectory in four phases:

  • Phase 1: Scripted Workflows (Past) – Automation based on predefined rules.
  • Phase 2: Predictive Workflows (2023) – Predictive AI optimizing workflows.
  • Phase 3: Generative AI (2024) – The use of generative AI to create responses and dynamic solutions.

  • AI Agent Orchestration: Coordinates and structures AI Agents’ actions for specific use cases.
  • AI Agent: The virtual agent that performs specific tasks.
  • Tools: The tools and technologies AI Agents use to perform their functions.

Real Impact of AI Agents

AI Agents have already demonstrated significant gains in productivity and efficiency. Some real-world examples include:

  • 18% reduction in incidents escalated to a specialist.
  • 33% reduction in incident resolution time.
  • 15 to 25 minutes reduction in major incident resolution time.

The Importance of Data Integration

AI Agents rely directly on efficient data integration. For optimal performance, we need a combination of AI Agents + Data + Workflows. However, one of the biggest challenges in AI is data fragmentation across silos, making intelligent automation difficult.

Professor Stuart Russell, in his book Human Compatible: Artificial Intelligence and the Problem of Control, highlights the importance of developing AI systems that align with human objectives. This reinforces the need for integrated and accessible data so that autonomous agents can make efficient decisions.

Fantastic read. Can we have a ServiceNow university course, where AI agents are built for specific use cases? Like, a video showing the whole process of AI agent creation and self-decision making for a simple task like 'Booking an appointment' or 'planning a meeting in IT environment'. 

I understand, to get hands-on for creating AI agents might not be feasible for most of us but a Video showing it would. Thanks,

This is really high level, meaning not much substantial content. A lot of words but what does it accomplish? I wish you had links to the topics you list such as Predictive Workflows.


You start a section with "How It Works" but then only state what "The AI Agentic framework consists of". This does not explain "How It Works". Also the 4 brief sentences are like dancing on the tip tops of the trees. We need to get down into the roots to understand it. A better title for this section would be "A brief overview of four areas of the AI Agentic framework". 


This article was listed in 
AI Agents vs. Traditional AI learning course which states that "This Now Assist article does a great job of summarizing the evolution to ServiceNow AI Agents." I think your article should have started with that statement, but leave out the word "great". The learning course also has a button titled "Dive Deeper" that links to this article, but it should really say "high level overview".
So using this article, where do we go from here? Do you have any links to some helpful content? I'm looking for the good stuff to get down and into the details. I'll keep reading the learning courses and hopefully they will get more details.
I have read a lot about the AI Agents but what are they really?
