Where do the ServiceNow names come from? #1 – Statistics by Willem
The hypothesis that will be covered:
- Version names are the Capital cities of countries.
- Version names are chosen based on the population of cities.
- Version names are based on the demo data (employees?)
- Version names are based on ServiceNow Office locations.

Hello @Ashley & @tiagomacul & @Amarjeet Pal
Would it be possible to provide a link to official ServiceNow documentation which indicates the End-Of-Life-Cycle is now a `N-1`?
So currently as of 11/03/2023 the 'N' is 'Vancouver' release
So currently as of 11/03/2023 the 'N-1' is 'Utah' release
I am developer working with ServiceNow and I would like to provide justification why our integration within ServiceNow should only support 'N-1' versions of ServiceNow, just hard to justify without official docs.
It a little confusing because as a developer we have access to 'N-3', so currently can spawn an instance for 'Vancouver', 'Utah', 'Tokyo' or 'San Diego' so just want to make it all clear for our team.
Thanks 😊

ServiceNow typically follows a support policy for their releases with a three-release cycle, today (nov-23) vancouver, utah, tokyo.
Please keep in mind that the ServiceNow documentation and support policies can change over time. Therefore, it's essential to access the most recent and official documentation to provide accurate justification.

Hi @Erik Stodola,
Official documentation I could find with it mentioned:
"Why Stay Current?
Staying current by upgrading to new release families is crucial to customer success. Staying
current enables you to take full advantage of the innovations made available through our
releases, to deploy new products, and to get the highest levels of security, availability, and
performance.
Supported and Unsupported Release Families
The current policy of ServiceNow is to support the most recent and the immediately previous
release families. Because ServiceNow generally releases two new release families per year, you
will need to upgrade approximately once per year to stay on a supported release family. The
timing and frequency of releases is subject to change at the sole discretion of ServiceNow.
ServiceNow provides Updates (e.g., patches and hotfixes) only for supported release families.
Required Upgrades
You generally can schedule upgrades at your convenience; however, if you fall behind and your
instance is on an unsupported release family, ServiceNow will schedule an upgrade for your
instance to the most current release family to ensure access to the latest features as well as the
latest security, performance, and availability benefits."
If you need the source:
Kind Regards
Ashley

Interesting decision to go with Bands/People for the next cycle of SN Upgrade names. Should one of the band/people later on end up being associated with something significantly negative, it would be immortalized within the version name.
Imagine a Jeffery Dahmer SN version!

It is difficult to predict what name ServiceNow will use for its next version after releasing Zurich Q4-2025.
However, I think - personal opinion - that a city-based name is more likely to be used, as this has been ServiceNow's tradition until now.
Some cities that seem possible to me are:
- Amsterdam: It is an important city in Europe and a center of innovation.
- Beijing: It is a major city in Asia and an important market for ServiceNow.
- etc: 🙂
It's also possible that ServiceNow uses a name based on a theme about "digital transformation," such as artificial intelligence or automation. However, I think this is less likely as ServiceNow has already used themes for some of their previous releases. Servicenow can always surprise me like it will at the "Knowledge 2024" event, I hope to see news on this topic soon.

@FernandoUrrutia actually, this has not always been the case, prior to Aspen, they used seasons, and then prior to seasons they used months.
Cheers,
Corey 🙂

I've gotten some reasonable confirmation that Alice Cooper and Bango Tango will not be the future version names. They did say, however, that they had a lot of fun talking about it and coming up with other names at an internal ServiceNow staff meeting.

Never cared for Istanbul, but they could have named that version iConstantinople, get that modern apple-esque sound along with the appropriate starting letter. Always liked the name Constantinople better than Istanbul anyway.
So... Australia is the next one. G'day, Mates! Throw some javascript on the barbie!

You should list the failed ServiceNow Express on here. I feel like it was at the same time as Dublin/Eureka. First version I was we’ve exposed to.

Yes, i remember, That's na good point. ServiceNow Express was a "version of ServiceNow", but it wasn’t a “release” in the same way as versions like Dublin or Eureka.
Express was a separate, simplified edition of the ServiceNow platform, designed for small to mid-sized businesses. It was launched around the same time as Dublin (2013) and Eureka (2014).
However, unlike the mainline platform releases (which follow city names), Express had its own product lifecycle and wasn’t part of the standard upgrade path.
ServiceNow officially discontinued Express in 2018, and customers were encouraged to migrate to the full Enterprise version of the platform.

Hi @balanandhin
: for n-1 support policy , standard EOL is GA+ 60 days when a new version is released, meaning when Yokohama was GA on March 12, 2025, official timelines for EOL Washington were GA+60 days to upgrade to atleast n-1.
