ADDING CUSTOM FIELDS IN REST API

Hello everyone,
I am new to serviceNow and started exploring using serviceNow to automate our company incident creation but i have some issues. We are currently going to be using the incident table rest api abc/api/now/table/incident, but we would like to add custom fields different from the ones service now currently offers for eg include things like deviation, dataCenterLocation etc. how do i add this fields as i already experimented on some things but they either kept throwing back errors or did not appear when incident was created.
