Software Install condition on SAM for Servers softwares

Parul Chaudhary

Hello @peterikeda1

I wanted to use the software install condition for licensing SQL Servers on certain machines. Sometimes, we need to account license for SQL Server Enterprise at ESX host level (as it provides unlimited licensing when licensed at host level) but I have not been able to use following condition to consume licenses only on virtual machines running on specified Hosts.

The SQL Server might not be deployed on ESX host itself (so it seems we can't use the install on condition directly), but here we need to account those ESX hosts which are running SQL servers on Virtual machines so, I am trying to use a condition where we could add the names of ESX servers which we know should be licensed.

Hi Paul,

We have assigned licenses to certain hosts using Device Allocations, you can get do that in your entitlement or the alm_entitlement_asset table.

Hope that helps!

Hi @BelindaViegen

Thank you for your response. The allocations are working well in my case as well but it's not overriding the tools license requirement (calculation done previously). My client is still non-compliant and we were hoping to get the install condition set up to account only specific host, so it not licenses everything else. Do you happen to get your install condition work for hosts?

Thank you,

Parul

Hi @Parul Chaudhary we can certainly meet to discuss further . ServiceNow SAM pro licenses at the cheapest layer be it VM layer or Host Layer automatically. As you know SQL server enterprise can be licensed at the host or the VM layer (if SA is active). If i read the comment above, you want to license SQL server enterprise at the hsot layer only . In this case you can go over the sql server enterprise entitlement and just add device allocation for the ESX hosts. To understand allocation management you can see this blog: https://www.servicenow.com/community/sam-blog/allocation-management-on-servicenow-sam-pro/ba-p/26492...

You may not require software install condition here.

If you still have doubt, please schedule a call with me.

Hi @SrinivasRamanu1

Thank you for sharing your feedback.

I started with manual allocations only, but it did not override the SAM Pro's own license assignment as stated in your reference blog as well. Wondering what could be preventing this? Are there any Business rules/system property or anything else that I would need to check to make sure this works?

Thank you,
