Approvals cancelled for change request nd requested items

Hi, 

i’m trying to trace what is updating approval records (sysapproval_approver ) where the Updated By = system and the state is being set to not_required then cancelled however the record is still active. 

• The approval records are being updated while the related record appears to still have Active = true
• However, the Business Rule condition is clearly Active = false
• I cannot find any other Business Rule, Client Script, or obvious trigger calling this function

  What are we missing?  if we make the business rule inactive, will it resolve this issue?

That BR is OOTB and I don't recommend modifying it

You potentially have a scheduled job or scheduled flow looking for approvals that are X days old and is updating the records. 

Alternatively flow allows for approvals to expire after a set duration and will cancel the approval after that duration
