Please check following three steps:
Step1 - ACL check whether there is "Read" operation for number field
Step 2 -Check whether both are on same form view. If both are same view, most likely is ACL indicated in step 1
Steps 3-If not ACL and Form View, please check whether you have client script or UI Policy related to this issue
