Difference between CMDB Groups (table: cmdb_group) or Groups (table: cmdb_ci_group)?

What is the difference between the 2:  CMDB Groups (table: cmdb_group) or Groups (table: cmdb_ci_group)?

Is there a reason they both exist?  Are their benefits to using one over the other?

Thanks,

Hi Julie,

Interesting question. They do seem quite similar.

cmdb_group is a grouping of CIs which allows the addition of queries to group the items.

The cmdb_ci_group table has a similar purpose, but is only a generic grouping for CIs that might be related, there are no queries or other filters that are associated. You could think of this like users in groups. You have 10 people in the desktop support group. You might have 10 CIs in the Desktop Support server CI group.

cmdb_ci_group might be a legacy table.

cmdb_group table should be used to manage the logical grouping of CIs. This isn't a CMDB table. The operational CI to use the group would be Dynamic CI Groups
