ServiceNow is a powerful platform for automating business processes, and email communication plays a critical role in most workflows. Whether it's sending notifications, receiving requests, or automating responses, enabling email functionality within ServiceNow is essential for seamless operations.
In this article, we will walk you through the process of configuring both outbound (sending) and inbound (receiving) email in a ServiceNow Personal Developer Instance (PDI).
By the end, you'll be able to ensure that your ServiceNow instance can send emails and process incoming emails efficiently.
Understanding Email in ServiceNow
Email functionality in ServiceNow consists of two main components:
- Outbound Email: This allows ServiceNow to send notifications, alerts, and other communication to users via email.
- Inbound Email: This enables ServiceNow to receive and process incoming emails, which can trigger actions like creating or updating records, replying to users, and more.
To fully leverage the platform’s email capabilities, you must ensure both outbound and inbound email settings are correctly configured.
Conclusion
Enabling email functionality in your ServiceNow developer instance unlocks a wide range of capabilities, from sending real-time notifications to automatically processing incoming requests. This video and article focus on configuring email integration in ServiceNow using a Personal Developer Instance (PDI). While ServiceNow has officially stopped supporting both inbound and outbound emails in PDIs, the steps outlined here were still functional during my last test. I encourage you to try and verify the configuration yourself. Keep in mind, these steps should work seamlessly if you're using other types of instances, such as Partner, Developer, or Production instances of ServiceNow.
