Next Experience UI/ Polaris - will it eventually be mandatory?

Will the "Next Experience UI" (Polaris) be mandatory for everyone at some point in the future? If so, when will that take place?

Any word on this?  I heard at Knowledge23 that it will be kinda/sorta mandatory in Vancouver, but haven't seen or read anything official.

@Ryan66 I heard something similar at K23 but I heard Xanadu.  I'd really like an idea so that we can appropriately plan the work and hold off on development that is not supported.  Thanks for posing the question.

I am able to extract this information from the Vancouver release notes
"Next Experience
is a Now Platform feature that is active by default when the user loads or upgrades to the Vancouver release. An opt-out system property can be created prior to upgrade if there are known problems with turning on Next Experience on an instance", which kind of Warns that 'New UI' is available unless a system property at hand prevents it from applying.
IMO, it has a long way to go away.

Are there plans with Xanadu to make Polaris UI mandatory, any updates on this status?  What does support for UI16 look like in the future, will it be retired at some point?

We have not announced any deprecation schedules for Core UI at the moment. I believe we announce deprecation 2-3 releases in advance and you'll see that in the release notes.
