Guidance Needed to Transition Into ServiceNow + Looking for Referrals

AkilRathnaK

Hello Everyone,

Hope you are all doing well.
I’m currently working in a different domain, but over the past few months I’ve developed a strong interest in the ServiceNow platform. I’ve been learning through the PDI, completing hands-on exercises, and familiarizing myself with best practices — and I’m very eager to build my career in the ServiceNow ecosystem.

I would be grateful for guidance from the community on:

  • Recommended learning paths or certifications for someone entering ServiceNow

  • How to position my current skills (ITIL, operations, support, etc.) when applying for ServiceNow roles

  • Tips for building a solid portfolio or showcasing PDI projects

  • Any suggestions to improve my chances during interviews

Additionally, if anyone is aware of openings suitable for entry-level or cross-domain candidates, or if you could refer me for opportunities where my skills could be a good fit, I would truly appreciate it.

Your support, suggestions, and references mean a lot as I make this transition.
Thank you in advance for taking the time to guide me.

Warm regards,
Akhil

I’m a ServiceNow trainer and happy to share my thoughts on this. ServiceNow is becoming increasingly broad and deep these days, and the best way to kickstart your journey is by earning the CSA (Certified System Administrator) certification. The CSA provides a solid understanding of the platform, its terminology, and core modules. Once you get hands-on experience with the platform through CSA, you can decide on your next path.

Employers value professionals with experience across multiple modules, so it’s important to expand your knowledge and add more products to your portfolio. Consider focusing on areas like ITSM, GRC, HRSD, CSM, or SecOps.

Currently, the training is free, which is a fantastic opportunity. However, the real challenge is gaining hands-on experience. To overcome this, the ServiceNow community is an excellent resource. Dedicate at least 1-2 hours a day engaging with the community — read questions others are asking and contribute your own responses. Over time, this will improve your skills and boost your confidence.

Additionally, mastering scripting is essential if you want to become a developer. There are many courses and exercises available on developer.servicenow.com to help you practice and enhance your scripting skills, which will strengthen your portfolio.

Start with the CSA certification and then choose your next step based on your interests — whether that’s development, becoming a Business Analyst, Change Manager, or Project Manager. A solid foundation will give you the flexibility to pursue any domain you prefer.

Hello @AkilRathnaK,

Welcome to the ServiceNow Community.

I would definitely recommend starting with a CSA path as it really does a great job of giving you a good breadth of the platform and it's capabilities. This is where I started and eventually opened the door to more advanced development opportunities.

A system administrator is a very common entry point, so don't think of it as a single destination.  Admin experience gets you comfortable with troubleshooting, security, configurations, and overall platform support. From there you can naturally grow into other roles like a developer, architect, project manager, or business analyst.

ServiceNow has done a great job curating career journeys over on ServiceNow University. This should give you an idea of what options are out there and what the average salaries look like. Towards the bottom of the page they even have an assessment tool that will ask you a few questions to help you decide on the right path.

I wanted to highlight the rise up program as well since you are just starting your journey. This is a free talent incubator run by ServiceNow. You can find more details and apply here

In addition, I highly recommend checking what training programs are available from partners or to research what organizations they partner with for their hiring needs. Usually this will consist of a short training program to prepare you for an interview. I started with and currently work for a partner and it really gives you the opportunity to see how a wide range of companies are utilizing ServiceNow. You can start your partner research here.

If you haven't already, I also highly recommend utilizing the developer portal learning plans. It will also help you build a portfolio to showcase any solutions you have come up with on your own. Anything you create can be exported to GitHub and there is a module that goes over those steps as well.

Good luck on your journey!
