Hello

I would like to know in simple terms what the role of Application designer in ServiceNow means, what are the roles and responsibilities for this role. What skills you need to have to be successful in this role. Whether coding and scripting skills will be needed for this role. Also, if business analyst role is equivalent to Application designer role or if they are different.

Thank you

Hello @RajagopallaV

An Application Designer is responsible for designing and configuring cus

tom applications or modules within the ServiceNow platform. They help define the structure, functionality, and user experience of an application — often using the App Engine Studio (AES) or Application Designer tool.

1)In simple terms, a whole application is being constructed - so you need to know how to configure "tables, fields, dictionary overrides, reference qualifiers, list views, if there is a respective workspace then configurable workspaces as well"

2)Decide on module layout, navigation, and user roles

3)Work with Business Analysts to gather requirements

4)Coordinate with Developers to implement custom logic

5)Use low-code/no-code tools (like Flow Designer, UI Builder)

ServiceNow PlatformUnderstanding of tables, relationships, ACLs, forms, UI policies, etc.
App Engine StudioAbility to design applications using low-code tools
Flow DesignerFor automating tasks without heavy scripting
Data ModelingKnow how to design tables and relationships effectively
UI/UX BasicsGood understanding of building user-friendly forms and experiences
Business AcumenAbility to translate business needs into platform solutions
CollaborationWork closely with developers, testers, and stakeholders

Coding and scripting is not mandatory, but you should know some as you need to design the form and and list and modules, you can co-ordinate with developers for the same, but you also need to know some, its beneficial.

Business Analyst - Gathers business requirements from stakeholders and probably creates a change or story or demand out of it based on the process you follow. Later on he can meet with "Application designers and Developers" to decide on the feasibility and timeline of this requirement. So, Business analyst is more of a requirement analyser and gatherer role and won't require much of the platform knowledge or coding.

I hope this answers your queries.
