Hello ServiceNow Community,
I am currently working as a Senior Support Engineer and have hands-on experience with ServiceNow-related operations, incident management, troubleshooting, and process improvement. I also hold both CSA and CAD certifications and am actively looking to transition into a ServiceNow Developer role.
I would appreciate any advice on making this transition successfully. Additionally, if anyone is aware of ServiceNow Developer opportunities, referrals, or teams looking for professionals with a support background and a strong interest in development, I would be grateful for any guidance.
Solved! Go to Solution.

Hi @Anupmak
ServiceNow is getting bigger, wider, and deeper with every release. Because of this, attending a single training course or earning a certification alone won't guarantee success. Certifications validate your knowledge, but what truly matters is building strong fundamentals and continuously learning as the platform evolves.
From your question, it sounds like you already have a good coding background, which is a great advantage. However, the key question is: do you have a solid understanding of the ServiceNow platform? If not, that's where you should begin.
My recommendation is to start with the Certified System Administrator (CSA) learning path. The Administrator Fundamentals course is freely available through Now Learning and provides an excellent introduction to the platform. It covers the platform architecture, core components, navigation, data model, security, and the fundamental concepts you'll use throughout your ServiceNow career.
Once you've built a strong platform foundation with CSA, move on to the Certified Application Developer (CAD) learning path. This is where your existing coding skills will become a real advantage. You'll learn how scripting, application development, business rules, client scripts, Flow Designer, and other development capabilities are implemented within the ServiceNow platform.
These two certifications provide a safe and structured roadmap:
- CSA – Build a strong understanding of the ServiceNow platform.
- CAD – Apply your programming knowledge to develop applications and customizations on the platform.
Following this path will give you both the platform knowledge and technical skills needed to grow confidently in the ServiceNow ecosystem.
I'm also sharing a few useful resources that will help you get started on your learning journey.

Here are a few tips:
-
Follow this master playlist to strengthen your JavaScript skills specifically for the ServiceNow platform.
https://youtu.be/62Nabpb94Jw?
-
Spend at least 1–2 hours daily on the ServiceNow Community. Observe the kinds of technical questions being asked and how experienced members respond. You’ll learn a lot passively this way—and I highly encourage you to start answering questions as well. Explaining concepts to others will improve your technical thinking and deepen your understanding.
-
Explore the free courses available on the ServiceNow Developer Site. These are practical and focused, and will help you apply your knowledge directly on the platform.

Hi @Anupmak
As I said, CSA and CAD are not the only areas you should focus on. We are now in the era of AI, and ServiceNow is also looking to expand its product portfolio.
Going forward, you should try to gain experience across different areas of ServiceNow, not just Flow Designer and Platform Analytics (PA), but also key products such as SAM, GRC, CSM, and others. At the same time, I would strongly recommend starting to learn AI as well.
A lot of these courses are available for free on Now Learning, so you can choose the areas that interest you and keep building your knowledge. The more you learn and the broader your knowledge becomes, the more opportunities you will have. At the very least, it will strengthen your CV and help you stand out on the shortlist.
I'm not saying you need to focus only on certifications. Certifications are important, but before that, knowledge and practical experience are key.
Think of it as building your ServiceNow portfolio so you can keep moving forward in your career.
ITSM is the foundation and something everyone should understand in ServiceNow. However, these days, AI is growing rapidly, including within ServiceNow. Now Learning has courses that can help you build that knowledge, and many of them are freely available.
As a trainer, I'm sharing my experience with you because I want you to build a strong portfolio and keep progressing. Take advantage of the learning resources available to you and keep expanding your skills.
