I’m a ServiceNow trainer and happy to share my thoughts on this. ServiceNow is becoming increasingly broad and deep these days, and the best way to kickstart your journey is by earning the CSA (Certified System Administrator) certification. The CSA provides a solid understanding of the platform, its terminology, and core modules. Once you get hands-on experience with the platform through CSA, you can decide on your next path.
Employers value professionals with experience across multiple modules, so it’s important to expand your knowledge and add more products to your portfolio. Consider focusing on areas like ITSM, GRC, HRSD, CSM, or SecOps.
Currently, the training is free, which is a fantastic opportunity. However, the real challenge is gaining hands-on experience. To overcome this, the ServiceNow community is an excellent resource. Dedicate at least 1-2 hours a day engaging with the community — read questions others are asking and contribute your own responses. Over time, this will improve your skills and boost your confidence.
Additionally, mastering scripting is essential if you want to become a developer. There are many courses and exercises available on developer.servicenow.com to help you practice and enhance your scripting skills, which will strengthen your portfolio.
Start with the CSA certification and then choose your next step based on your interests — whether that’s development, becoming a Business Analyst, Change Manager, or Project Manager. A solid foundation will give you the flexibility to pursue any domain you prefer.
If my response proves useful, please indicate its helpfulness by selecting " Accept as Solution" and " Helpful." This action benefits both the community and me.

As a ServiceNow trainer, I'm happy to share my thoughts with you.
These days, ServiceNow is expanding both horizontally and vertically—meaning there are many modules that clients and organizations are demanding. However, that doesn't mean we should just follow every trend. A strong foundation and core knowledge are always important.
To brush up on your knowledge, if you have some free time, I recommend taking the CSA (Certified System Administrator) training—not necessarily for certification, but as a refresher to strengthen your platform basics.
For scripting, there are many resources available online, but I would emphasize that scripting can't be mastered just through books—it requires hands-on practice. You can take scripting courses on ServiceNow University or the Developer Site—both offer good options to learn scripting in-depth.
My experience of learning to master JavaScript , specially for ServiceNow, was from two Courses. The first and my foremost favorite in terms of learning JavaScript was from @Chuck Tomasi. It was fun to exercise with a PDI and follow the videos at your pace.

Then another option to consider is the following certification course available on LinkedIn Learning. But this one is outside of ServiceNow but definitely a worthy secondary option that can help you with a Professional Certificate as well.

Hello Felicia - Here are some starter items I recommend that people who what to learn the platform do - items that have been struck through you have completed already since you are posting on this community:
Go to Servicenow.com and get a ServiceNow ID by hitting on the Person icon at the top right and Register – do this first and personally I recommend doing this with a personal email and not a work one but either is fine.
- Go to the ServiceNow University Site for all the classes and learning you will need. First time visiting hit the person icon to the right of the Signup Button. It will have you login with the account you established in item 1.
- First - Under Career Journey in the Menu - Look at the System Administrator track first and the the Application Developer Track for recommendations on learning to take for these two tracks. I highly recommend you begin with the 3 hour Welcome to ServiceNow course at NowLearning. This is a course meant for people who are brand new to the ServiceNow platform and will give you a great overview. Can be optional depending on your familiarity with the platform but it is one of the first 3 items in the System Administration track.
- Go to the Developer Portal and get a Personal Development instance: https://developer.servicenow.com/ - this will let you play as you learn and the key to being a good developer on ServiceNow is building, building, and more building.
ServiceNow Community – Good place to find resources: https://community.servicenow.com/community
- Documentation site: https://servicenow.com/docs
I hope this helps you get going on a great and rewarding career.
