Hello ServiceNow Community 👋,

My name is Ashutosh Kumar, and I recently started exploring the ServiceNow ecosystem with a strong interest in building my career in ITSM, workflow automation, and enterprise solutions.

I completed my B.Tech in Computer Science & Engineering and also pursued PGDAC, where I developed skills in:

Java, SQL, and Full Stack Development
 Cloud and Enterprise Technologies
 Scripting & Automation
 Database Management
 REST APIs and System Integration

Currently, I am learning ServiceNow through self-paced modules, guided projects, and community resources. I’m highly interested in understanding real-world implementations and industry best practices.

I’ve started learning topics such as:

🔹 ITSM Fundamentals
🔹 Flow Designer & Workflow Automation
🔹 User & Role Management
🔹 CMDB & CSDM
🔹 Knowledge Management
🔹 Virtual Agent & AI Workflows
🔹 Service Catalog & Incident Management

I’m also completing a ServiceNow Virtual Internship Program and exploring certifications like CSA (Certified System Administrator).

I would really appreciate guidance from experienced community members on:

1. Best roadmap to become job-ready in ServiceNow
2. Skills/modules most in demand for freshers
3.  How to gain real-world hands-on experience
4. Recommended projects to build a strong portfolio
5. Tips for getting internships or entry-level ServiceNow roles

I’m very passionate about learning ServiceNow deeply and contributing to enterprise workflow transformation and automation projects in the future

Thank you for your support and guidance 🙏

Being a ServiceNow trainer, I’m happy to share my thoughts.

As you mentioned, you already have experience using the ServiceNow tool. It’s no longer just a ticketing system—ServiceNow is expanding deeper and wider across multiple business areas.

To get started with ServiceNow, the first and most recommended step is the CSA (Certified System Administrator) course. You can begin with the Now Learning course for this. After completing it, you can move on to the ITSM (IT Service Management) Fundamentals, which is another key area.

You also need to decide whether you want to move into the development side or the functional side, as the learning path changes based on your interest and industry.

I’m also sharing another post of mine here for more details.

Hi @ashutosh2825

I would really appreciate guidance from experienced community members on:

1. Best roadmap to become job-ready in ServiceNow

Atul:

The roadmap depends on your interests. Are you looking for a developer role or something else?

If you are aiming for development, I would strongly recommend going for the Developer Journey available in Now Learning. You can also explore the Developer site to learn more from there.

In development, coding is key, and for that you should focus on learning JavaScript.

2. Skills/modules most in demand for freshers

Atul:Everything is in demand. As a fresh company, basic knowledge of coding is expected, along with familiarity with the platform and at least hands-on experience in 1–2 modules such as GRC, HRSD, CSM, etc.

3.  How to gain real-world hands-on experience

Atul: The community is one of the best ways to learn. Come here, read the questions others are asking and the answers shared, and then start answering them yourself as well.

4. Recommended projects to build a strong portfolio

Atul: That is about integrating things. Use cases are all around you—you just need a spark to start. Recently, there was a ServiceNow community challenge where many members submitted their ideas. You can pick any of those ideas and start building.

5. Tips for getting internships or entry-level ServiceNow roles

Atul:It can be tough at the beginning, but connect with people in the same ecosystem. Follow them on LinkedIn, and it might help you learn, stay updated, and grow your network.

Now that you're targeting the CAD (Certified Application Developer) certification — that’s exciting!

Before you jump into CAD, I’d like to share a quick recommendation based on experience:
While CSA is more theoretical and foundational, CAD is heavily practical and scripting-focused. Even if you complete the training quickly (within a month), I’d advise not to rush into the certification exam just yet. Take the time to build your scripting skills first — it’s crucial.

🔍 What’s Required for CAD?

CAD focuses mainly on JavaScript and application development within the ServiceNow platform. To succeed, you'll need to deep dive into scripting. Here’s what helped me personally:

📘 Top JavaScript Learning Resources:

  1. YouTube Series by @Chuck Tomasi
This is an excellent, beginner-friendly series that uses the PDI (Personal Developer Instance) and walks you through concepts at your own pace:

  2. LinkedIn Learning: JavaScript Foundations by Mozilla
Though not ServiceNow-specific, this course is great for strengthening your base in JavaScript and also offers a Professional Certificate:

🛠️ Practice is Key!

There are many resources for scripting, but remember: you can't master scripting just by reading. You need real, hands-on practice.

  • Use the ServiceNow Developer Site or ServiceNow University.

  • Build apps, play around in your PDI, and experiment with client/server-side scripting.

💡 Tips to Gain Real Experience:

  • Engage actively with the ServiceNow Community
Spend at least 1–2 hours daily:

    • Read posts

    • Ask questions

    • Try answering others’ queries
This will enhance your understanding and boost your confidence.

📈 Start Your CAD Journey on Now Learning:

You can follow the structured CAD learning path on Now Learning to stay on track and prepare effectively.
