Changing Project Task Planned End Date not Changing Parent Planned End Date

Occasionally when a Project Manger changes the Planned End Date on a child Project Task the parent is not being updated to that date, even though it is the latest date of all the child tasks. I'm wondering if there is a scenario where this is the intended behavior.

We only use planned end date on project tasks, so I'm not certain if this could be occurring with other date fields.

There are some funky business rule and client script calculations that populates the planned end date, there are some rules if there is no planned start date. That could be causing the issue. Do have any step to recreate this error/ bug?

Thank you sachin.namjoshi - I will review these blogs.

Hi,

The calculation field on the project must be set to "Automatic"

CalculationType of calculation to use for task dependencies:
  • Manual: Task dates do not reflect any changes made to dependencies.
  • Automatic: Task dates are automatically updated to reflect any changes made to dependent or child tasks.

Thank you Patrick - The calculation field is set to automatic and the planned end date does rollup the majority of the time.

Our issue is that it occasionally does not. This happens within a project where other child task's planned end dates are rolling up as expected. I guess I'm trying to determine in what scenario a parent project task would not reflect the furthest planned end date of it's children tasks.

Looking at the articles sachin.namjoshi suggested, I understand that the planned end date is calculated in conjunction with the planned start date, actual start date and duration, but as I understand it, a parent task should always reflect the furthest out planned end date of it's children tasks.

I'm looking to determine if this behavior (furthest planned end date not rolling up to its parent) is expected based a particular criteria. Is there a correlation between project task state and the rolling up of planned end date for instance?
