Cost Center and PPM?

I am trying to wrap my head around the relationship between cost centers with the Cost Management module and then the investment entities with the Investment module. Both, to me, seem to be plausible relationships to projects in PPM, but I can only find direct documentation for relating investments to projects/programs/portfolios. I can't seem to find anything relating cost centers to projects/etc.

My use case would be to assign an account number to a project so we could track overall expenses of a project to a corresponding account, then track all expenses for all projects related to that single account.

Cost centers seem perfect because they actually have a field for account number, but I can't see where you relate them to a project. I could "hack" investment entities with names to be account numbers, but that seems like I'm mis-using the system.

Am I missing an obvious connection? Are cost centers *not* supposed to be related to PPM things?

Cost Centers are mainly used for tracking costs of configuration items. But I do agree with you that it makes sense to use them. You can either link the investments to cost centers, or customize further and add the cost centers to your projects. Either solution will mean customization.
