How do other organization put PPM projects on hold

We are looking for organization and their process of putting projects on hold? We hear that adding an on-hold state in the state field might cause issue with out of the box logic. Looking for suggestions. Thanks

We added a checkbox that we check when the project goes on hold.  When that checkbox is checked we also display a "Hold Review Date" field that we enter in when this project needs to be reviewed again to come off hold.  That way we can run reports and monitor for projects to come off of that hold state.
