How to handle resource manager substitution during vacations or sick leave in ServiceNow?

Hi everyone,
I have a question related to Resource Management / PPM. We have a scenario where a resource manager can be temporarily unavailable (vacation, sick leave, etc.), and another person needs to act as a substitute during that period.
I know that ServiceNow offers the delegator capacity, but as far as I am concerned, this functionality only applies to approvals and emails, not necessary these kind of necessities. Is there any OOTB solution which does not require to temporarily assign the role or changing (in the case of projects) the field of manager...?
I am asking specifically for SPM but I suppose that this problem exists also for other products in ServiceNow, so if maybe anybody experienced a similar issue and may answer, I'd like to hear from you.
If anyone has implemented a similar setup, I’d appreciate hearing how you solved it and what best practices you followed.
