Remove Capex/Opex from cost plans

Acceptance Criteria:

As a Project Manager, I need to add the SOW dollars to my project so that my actuals, forecasting and burndown$ are accurate.

I will know when this is complete when CapEx and OpEx are removed from the Project.  

 

If someone could please assist/ guide .

Hi @kirsten_for,

 

I'm assuming this is the newer Project Workspace Financials experience, the Costs and benefits tab you screenshotted, not the classic Cost Plan related list, so the rest of this is for that setup.

Verdict: you can't actually remove Capex/Opex as a concept. Every cost type in the resource_type_definition table carries a mandatory Expense Type of Capex or Opex, and OOB budgeting, rollups, and the investment portal widgets all lean on that split existing somewhere. What you can do is get rid of the two specific placeholder rows in your screenshot, "other capex" and "Other opex" showing 60K and 72K planned cost, and replace them with one clean line tied to your SOW.

  1. Open the project's cost plan and delete the "other capex" and "Other opex" lines. These are the OOB catch-all cost types the platform auto-creates when a cost plan or expense line gets generated without an explicit cost type assigned, which is almost certainly why they're sitting there at zero actuals.
  2. Create or reuse a real cost type for external/contractor spend, something like External Labor or SOW, tagged to whichever expense type is actually correct for your org, usually Opex for a services SOW, Capex only if finance is capitalizing it.
  3. Click New cost plan and add a line against that cost type, spreading the SOW total across the fiscal periods so actuals, forecast, and burndown pick it up correctly going forward.
  4. If the grid still shows a Capex vs Opex split you don't want after that, check the sn_invest_pln.budget_allocation_attribute property. It controls whether Financials groups by expense_type or by cost_type, and switching it to cost_type will show your named categories instead of the two default buckets.

One thing that would change my answer: are you trying to clear out those two zero-dollar rows specifically, or does your org want SOW cost tracked completely outside the Capex/Opex model? If it's the second one, that's a bigger conversation, since it fights the platform's financial data model rather than working within it.
