SPM — Resource Plans Deprecation Sep 2026 — Is Skipping Migration a Viable Option?

Hi Friends,

We are a small team evaluating whether we truly need to migrate Resource Plans to Resource Assignments before the September 2026 deprecation deadline.

Before investing significant effort we want to make an informed decision. Would love the community's input on:

  1. What does ServiceNow's deprecation actually mean in practice? Read-only? Full removal? Is there official documentation on exactly what breaks and when?
  2. Has anyone raised this with their ServiceNow TAM or Account team? What did they say about the consequences of not migrating?
  3. Is there any official communication from ServiceNow on whether there will be a grace period or phased removal across releases?
  4. For those who have already assessed this — is Resource Assignments genuinely better or is it largely the same functionality with a different name?

We are essentially trying to decide between:

  • Migrate before Sep 2026 — safe but costly in team capacity
  • Skip and reassess post-upgrade — risky but frees up our roadmap

Any insights, TAM conversations or official SN documentation references would be really helpful!

Generally, deprecating means they're just not updating it anymore.  You'll still get to to use it.  I've helped implement many new instances of the Resource Management tool and highly recommend it over the old tool.  It's easier to use, has more features, they continue to add features every two months, and it integrates with the other workspaces for better capacity planning and resource planning.  I'd migrate as soon as you are able.

@Khanna Ji What is your source for Sept 2026 deadline?

Resource Plans as a record are NOT deprecated because they are used in the back end of Resource Assignments. The true deprecation was Allocation Workbench with transition to Resource Management Workspace. So the "legacy" resource management where customers utilize Resource Plans for managing Resources should be migrated to Resource Assignments. Below is the verbiage which also contains the Deprecation process KB describing what it actually means.

YOKOHAMA Docs Page for Allocation Workbench:
Important:

Allocation workbench is being deprecated starting Xanadu release. It will be hidden and no longer available for installation. For details, see the Deprecation Process [KB0867184] article in the Now Support Knowledge Base.

Resource Managers are encouraged to use the Resource Management Workspace to allocate, approve, and manage resource assignments. Resource Management Workspace is a dedicated workspace view for Resource Managers where you get the insights about unassigned tasks, heatmap view of resource bandwidth, custom view to handle priority resource assignment requests, and so on.
