Strategic Portfolio Management Roadmaps - View Task/Milestones using Parent field filters

Is it possible to create a dashboard, roadmap or modify the portfolio planning workspace to view the Project Tasks and milestones of a project but utilize the fields on the project to filter the list.

We are trying to create a roadmap of the tasks to identify the training sessions for the multiple areas of a program.  We'd rather now add fields to the project task to complete this but we are struggling to make this work.  Any insights would be helpful.

Thanks.

Hi Tammy.  The Portfolio Planning Workspace is showing Planning Items - typically items that you're using to make intelligent strategic decisions about which pieces of work will give you the most benefit, or help you deliver your strategic goals.

The kind of analysis you're describing, with Project Tasks displayed under project records, is much better suited to the Project Workspace - where project records can be viewed and managed by Project Managers.

However, if you are determined that this type of record does need to be displayed in the Portfolio Planning Workspace, you'd have quite a challenging journey ahead:  You'd want to start by getting the Project Tasks synched into planning items - something you'd need SPM Pro to do - by extending the planning item table for a Project Task, and replicating the integration that creates project so that 'project task' type planning items get created for your project tasks.   Once you've done that, you'd be able to add the 'Project Task' planning items to strategic portfolio and view them in roadmaps, but this would not make them children of 'Project' records in the planning or workspace views.  This would require significant additional development.

I hope this helps.

Thank you for your insight Phil, if we didn't include it in the Portfolio Planning Workspace and just created a separate dashboard, should we be able to utilize the fields in the Project to sort the Project Task List?

I'd say it's technically possible, - the records are all available for users with roles to view, so there's no real limit to what could be achieved - but I'm not quite sure why this would give you something you don't get from the Project Workspace, which is a great place to look at projects in full detail, and has some great options for configuration.
