Hi @mikejmilesu

  •  I’m a ServiceNow trainer, happy to share my thoughts with anyone starting their ServiceNow journey.
  • ServiceNow is expanding rapidly, both in breadth and depth — the best way to begin is by earning the CSA (Certified System Administrator) certification.
  •  The CSA builds a strong foundation in platform fundamentals, terminology, and core modules — once you gain hands-on experience, you can decide your next learning path.
  • Employers value multi-module expertise, so after CSA, explore products like ITSM, GRC, HRSD, CSM, or SecOps to broaden your portfolio.
  •  Training is currently free, which is a great opportunity — but the key challenge is hands-on experience.
  • Engage with the ServiceNow Community for at least 1–2 hours a day — read discussions, answer questions, and share insights to strengthen your understanding and confidence.
  •  If your goal is development, focus on scripting skills using resources on developer.servicenow.com. Practice consistently to boost your technical expertise.
  • Start with the CSA, then progress based on your interests — Admin, Developer, Business Analyst, Change Manager, or Project Manager — a strong foundation opens all paths.
  • Welcome to this dedicated community space! Connect, collaborate, and grow with peers. Share ideas, seek guidance, and help others in their learning journey.

I started my ServiceNow journey over 3 years ago and have completed my CSA, CIS-ITMS and am currently studying for the CAD exam. I work solely with ServiceNow but am limited to training and advancement. I currently spend my days building reports and dashboards for multiple teams, testing for our ServiceNow catalog in multiple environments, assisting with Knowledge article creation and management and fielding ServiceNow questions from team members on our contract. (I don't always have the answers, but I have built a network of folks that are able to help me find the solution.) Passing the certifications is great, but getting the experience can be an up-road battle. I spend at least 30 minutes to an hour a day trying to learn something new, but knowledge and experience are not the same.

I think companies would benefit from hiring entry level ServiceNow employees if they have the staff to train them. As a veteran schoolteacher, I possess all of the soft skills needed for a ServiceNow System Administrator role but would need an experienced team member to train me, I am humble enough to admit that.

I am sure I am not the only one eager to show a company what I am capable of, given the appropriate support.
