Starting my path in Service now!

Hello Service now community!

I recently decided to start my path as Admin in Service now (recommended by the test in the carrer journeys) looking for an improvement in my professional career. I already finished the Welcome to Service now micro-certification and the CSA following the admin path.

My principal concern is that, I am not working on an IT position yet, I am still learning some basic information, and I am not sure If I should complete the CSA exam yet. I have one friend that have been working with SN already and her advice was to look for a job related with the  platform, and gain some ,months of experience before presenting the exam.

Looking your your recommendation and advices!

Hi @AndresFeliP

ServiceNow is getting bigger, wider, and deeper with every release. Because of this, attending a single training course or earning a certification alone won't guarantee success. Certifications validate your knowledge, but what truly matters is building strong fundamentals and continuously learning as the platform evolves.

From your question, it sounds like you already have a good coding background, which is a great advantage. However, the key question is: do you have a solid understanding of the ServiceNow platform? If not, that's where you should begin.

My recommendation is to start with the Certified System Administrator (CSA) learning path. The Administrator Fundamentals course is freely available through Now Learning and provides an excellent introduction to the platform. It covers the platform architecture, core components, navigation, data model, security, and the fundamental concepts you'll use throughout your ServiceNow career.

Once you've built a strong platform foundation with CSA, move on to the Certified Application Developer (CAD) learning path. This is where your existing coding skills will become a real advantage. You'll learn how scripting, application development, business rules, client scripts, Flow Designer, and other development capabilities are implemented within the ServiceNow platform.

These two certifications provide a safe and structured roadmap:

  1. CSA – Build a strong understanding of the ServiceNow platform.
  2. CAD – Apply your programming knowledge to develop applications and customizations on the platform.

Following this path will give you both the platform knowledge and technical skills needed to grow confidently in the ServiceNow ecosystem.

I'm also sharing a few useful resources that will help you get started on your learning journey.

Here are a few tips:

  1. Follow this master playlist to strengthen your JavaScript skills specifically for the ServiceNow platform.

  1. Spend at least 1–2 hours daily on the ServiceNow Community. Observe the kinds of technical questions being asked and how experienced members respond. You’ll learn a lot passively this way—and I highly encourage you to start answering questions as well. Explaining concepts to others will improve your technical thinking and deepen your understanding.

  1. Explore the free courses available on the ServiceNow Developer Site. These are practical and focused, and will help you apply your knowledge directly on the platform.

Yes, the training is free, but the certification exam is not necessarily free. You can apply for the relevant certification program, where you can access the exam and dedicated training. Here is the link for more information: ServiceNow Certification and Training

Hi @AndresFeliP ,

There are ample of sources are available for CSA exam preparation guideline.

Please follow the below articles where consolidated resources are available.

Certified System Administrator (CSA) Learning Path - ServiceNow University
Certification Exam Preparation: Certified System Administrator - ServiceNow University
Exam blueprint: Credentials - Certified System Administrator (CSA) Mainline Exam Blueprint - Knowledge Portal

Please get hands-on practice in your PDI with the concepts you are learning from different sources. Make sure to focus on scripting as well.

You should practice both client-side scripting concepts, such as Client Scripts, UI Policies, and UI Actions, and server-side scripting concepts, such as Business Rules, Script Includes, and Scheduled Jobs. Also, pay special attention to security concepts, particularly ACLs, to strengthen your overall ServiceNow development skills.
