Hello everyone,
My career background is primarily in consulting and professional services, including management consulting, change management, advisory work, and strategy. I’m at a point where I’m ready to make a career shift and add a more technical skillset to complement my consulting experience.
I’m currently learning ServiceNow, given how widely it’s used—especially in the government and public sector—and I’m planning to pursue the Certified System Administrator (CSA) certification.
For those who are working as CSAs, ServiceNow administrators, developers, or consultants (or who have previously held the CSA certification):
How did you navigate your career after earning the CSA?
What roles or career paths did the certification realistically open up for you?
Beyond certification prep, what hands-on activities or learning approaches helped you become truly comfortable with the platform over time?

Greetings!
I am a ServiceNow trainer and would be happy to guide you.
ServiceNow is expanding both in depth and breadth these days, so moving forward, career planning needs to be done very carefully.
Anyone who wants to start their career in ServiceNow should begin with the basics—ServiceNow Administration. This helps participants understand the platform, terminology, core concepts, architecture, and foundational knowledge that is used across all ServiceNow products. At this stage, you can prepare for the CSA (Certified System Administrator) certification. There are dedicated CSA courses available on Now Learning, either as individual courses or guided learning journeys—you can choose what suits you best.
After completing CSA, the next step depends on the direction you want to take—development or a specific product specialization.
If you want to move into development, CAD (Certified Application Developer) is the next step. This focuses on development concepts, scripting, and other coding-related aspects of ServiceNow.
After that, you can choose any product based on your interest and demand, such as ITSM (which is widely required), CSM, HRSD, GRC, or any other ServiceNow product, and continue growing in that direction.
As a foundation, CSA → CAD is a good path to follow.
Additionally, if you do not want to go into development, there are other career options such as Business Analyst (BA), Business Process Consultant (BPC) (I am a BPC), Technical Support Specialist, or Change Manager (OCM).

Spend at least 1–2 hours daily on the ServiceNow Community. Observe the kinds of technical questions being asked and how experienced members respond. You’ll learn a lot passively this way—and I highly encourage you to start answering questions as well. Explaining concepts to others will improve your technical thinking and deepen your understanding.

How did you navigate your career after earning the CSA?
I put into practice what I learned by joining a Platform Operations team that focused heavily on systems administration while keeping the door open to development and automation work.
What roles or career paths did the certification realistically open up for you?
Its a foundation, so professionally to realistically do anything with the product a CSA (I would argue a CAD as well) is pretty invaluable as you get started because it touches on the core principles of systems administration within ServiceNow and it's a great place to start. Having the CSA will help identify you as a resource that can 'do the work' but it also serves as the foundation to build your Certified Implementer portfolio (lets say you want to specialize in ITAM, ITOM or ITSM).
Beyond certification prep, what hands-on activities or learning approaches helped you become truly comfortable with the platform over time?
The PDI is a pretty big game changer, I use it to align re-world scenarios and keep a trello board of a psuedo company that mirrors what I would do in the real world (upgrades, security, ATF's etc). Also getting hands on experience is paramount. Bringing an enterprise system to OOTB and reducing customizations will teach you quite a bit.
The last bit here, build scenarios, pretend you are a CEO of a company and you want to build an entirely automated platform system to support building a space station on the moon of Jupiter, come up with something big and you will be surprised how effective that is in identifying challenges and creating real world use cases. It will teach you everything from Architecture and Governance to Automation and Development. It also keeps you motivated.
