How to setup a data center, zone, racks location field in hardware asset form? At the end I should be able to know what all assets are there in which data center, zone racks just like I setup stockroom. Slightly different concept! But seeking valuable insight and direction on this. Feel free to ask me questions!

A couple thoughts on this:

  • Have you considered just using the Location to help identify this? You could set up a zone location with a DC location as a parent, racks with zones as parents, etc.
  • Are you looking to pull this information from an automated source? If so, then I could understand why Location might be difficult to use.
  • I know some others must be doing something with this because they have set up maps to show where things are happening in their Data Centers. I can try to find some additional information later if someone else does not have good information handy...

Hi Ben,

I was more so looking in terms of stockroom. We can create a transfer order to move assets from one stockroom to another and obviously stockroom has a location. Can I create a stockroom that is a datacenter, so that I know what all assets are being used in a particular data center?

Hmmm... That is an interesting use case. While you *could* create a stockroom for your Data Centers (and even create a stockroom type to accommodate reporting on it). The problem with Stockrooms here is that you cannot set a Stockroom when an asset is In use. My other concern here would be a huge proliferation of Stockrooms to account for racks to support this.

Do you need the full tracking in Transfer Orders to manage these moves? You may be better off with Change Requests to track these moves.
