I would want to appear for Servicenow system admin certification and hence would like to know if it is mandatory to formally get trained before appearing for the exam. Does this certification program validates if you are trained prior to the exam?

Yes not mandatory but it helps, especially if you don't have a lot of working knowledge. It helps to point in the right direction. I took the training before doing my sys admin exam but just took the developer exam today and passed without going for the application creation training so it is doable but don't take anything for granted. If you can afford it i'd say it's worth it.
Best Wishes

Just in case anyone sees this older question, the answer has since changed. It now is mandatory that you pay for and attend ServiceNow's course, before you will be allowed to take an exam.
From the FAQ on the WebAssessor site (as of 8/6/2018) where you go to register for an exam (note the bolded section):
FAQs:
1. Do certifications expire?
Yes. We are moving to a “delta” program starting with London where certified individuals must take short (~10 questions), non-proctored exams for each release. Delta exams will be available 15 days after the GA release date.
2. Can I use a credit card to register for an exam for the first time?
No. ServiceNow now requires that you attend training as part of the certification process. When you attend the class before an exam in the learning path, you will receive a voucher for the exam with your materials that you can use to register. Retake and Delta exams will allow credit card payment through Webassessor.
3. If I do not pass, can I retake the exam?
Yes. You can retake an exam up to three times for $75 USD each.
4. How often will ServiceNow update each of the new product certifications?
Each certification will be updated for each ServiceNow release. Versions will be available 15 days after the GA release date.
5. There are no testing centers near me. Can I take an exam with online proctoring?
Yes. Please see this link for more information: https://www.kryteriononline.com/test-taker/online-proctoring-support. Note that you will need an external webcam to enable the proctor to see the entire testing environment.

Hello Team,
I am trying to enroll for System Administrator Certification exam. while adding the exam to shopping cart and proceed with the payments I am getting the below note and says : Your cart contains voucher only exams. Please enter your voucher code to proceed.
Let me know how to get the Voucher to enroll for certification exam, I have come to know that to get the Voucher you need to attend the training and before the start of training you will be grated with a Voucher.
Is there any way that I can enroll to certification other than attending the mandate trainings?
if any one has faced the same issue please highlight how to proceed.
Appreciate your help in advance!
Thanks,
Adarsh

Hi Adarsh,
Starting from- 1st July, 2018 onward, its mandatory to attend a training before you sit for a certification exam. You will get the voucher code as a part of that training (within an e-book), which you can then redeem on the Web Assessor portal.
Please find attached the PDF document with more information on this.
If in case you are an employee in a firm, which is an authorized Silver, Gold or platinum partner, then your firm can try to arrange for this mandatory training at a negotiated price. If in case your firm is not an official authorized partner with ServiceNow, then the only option is ti attend the training costing around 2100 USD and then obtain the voucher code for a certification exam.
Regards,
Mishu

Hi Adarsh,
It used to be that if you had sufficient experience (and perhaps took a $15 udemy course) you could successfully sit for ServiceNow certification exams.
Personally, I don't like this, but the certification program has changed, and you now are required to attend ServiceNow's official training courses before you can sit for any of their certifications.
If you have never held the ServiceNow CSA certification, then you will have to take the 3-day "ServiceNow Fundamentals" course ($2,095). With your $2,095 class registration, you will be provided with a "free" exam voucher which you can then use to schedule your exam later.
If you have previously held the CSA certification, and are trying to renew a certification you already had, I'd recommend reaching out to the ServiceNow certification team to see if they might grant you a one-time exemption from this rule. No guarantees, but worth a try when it's a difference of $2,095 vs $150.
