ServiceNow mentorship program
Embarking on a mentorship journey can be a transformative experience, fostering personal growth and professional development in profound ways. In this article, we delve into the inspiring story of Geoff ( @Geoff_T ) , a driven ServiceNow enthusiast, who sought to expand his skillset and navigate a future role in IT Service Management and Operations Management. Geoff's journey took flight when he joined the ServiceNow Developer Mentorship program, connecting with the mentor Willem Zeiler ( @Willem ). Through their collaborative partnership, Geoff achieved remarkable milestones, earning certifications and securing a new role as a ServiceNow platform developer.
Way back in mid February 2022 I applied to the ServiceNow Developer Mentorship program. My ServiceNow experience primarily involved maintaining and enhancing a mature Service Catalog for a large enterprise company.
The decision to apply to the program as a mentee was born out of a desire to broaden my skillset on the platform. I envisioned a future role developing across ITSM, ITOM and maybe more. Ultimately, I wanted some insight into how might I best navigate this transition. Browsing the developer blog, I noticed the mentorship program application; it peaked my interested and I decided I'd apply.
2 weeks later a partnership was established. I'd been very fortunate to have been paired with Willem Zeiler; 2-time ServiceNow Community MVP award winner at the time (now 3!).
Willem is based in the Netherlands and I'm from Northern Ireland. We established a rolling monthly meeting where we'd meet face to face on Teams and work through some agenda items whilst also enjoying some conversation around aims and goals during the partnership. I was lucky to lean on Willem's wide range of knowledge as he helped me formulate a plan to progress towards the role I wanted. He introduced me to new concepts including the T-Shaped model; something to this day that is at the forefront of my mind as I traverse my current and future learnings and development.
I managed to earn the Certified Implementation Specialist - IT Service Management certification during our mentorship in addition to ITIL Level 4 foundation. Willem took the time to introduce me to The Open Group IT4IT Standard and other topics including the CSDM 4.0 model.
I've since written articles on my new blog and ultimately achieved a new role as a ServiceNow platform developer within my current company; achieving what I set out to complete at the beginning of this journey.
Willem has a measured and assured aura about him and I really appreciated how humble he is. Full of great advice and direction he helped instil a confidence in myself as the partnership continued. I've been able to apply this not only from a technical perspective but also at a more strategic level since I'm cognisant that my input has value and can shape the route of projects, I am now involved in.
As I look back, I'm glad I made the decision back in February 2022 to join the program. I was wary of committing to it as a mentee considering I'm no rookie in the ServiceNow world. The benefit of having a mentor like Willem is he helped pull me back to the realization that I was already accomplished and could achieve what I aimed for. With a little re-direction and his always logical and considered advice I've let the handbrake off.
Going forward I'm certainly willing to ride the roll of mentor should the program continue. I've a lot of knowledge I feel I can pass on and this would be a great way to do so.
As a mentor in the ServiceNow Developer Mentorship program, I eagerly joined in early 2022 to share my experience in ServiceNow development and administration with Geoff. Collaborating with Geoff and empowering him throughout our journey was a privilege I couldn't pass up.
Geoff, located in Northern Ireland, sought to broaden his ServiceNow skillset for a future role in ITSM and ITOM. Through monthly virtual meetings on Teams, Geoff and I discussed his aspirations and goals, while I introduced him to the T-Shaped model (a valuable concept for skill diversification).
During our mentorship, Geoff achieved the Certified Implementation Specialist - IT Service Management certification and ITIL Level 4 foundation. Together, we explored topics like The Open Group IT4IT Standard and the CSDM 4.0 model, enhancing his knowledge and understanding.
I collaborated closely with Geoff to instil confidence in his abilities, reminding him of his accomplishments and encouraging strategic thinking. Witnessing Geoff's growth and achievements, including the establishment of his own blog and securing a role as a ServiceNow platform developer, filled me with pride.
As I reflect on this journey, I'm grateful for the opportunity to have positively impacted Geoff's life and career. Our collaborative mentorship experience has inspired me to continue sharing knowledge and supporting others in their professional development.
If you're considering becoming a mentor, don't hesitate. The mentorship journey is incredibly fulfilling, creating lasting impacts and meaningful connection. Collaborating with someone on their career path and witnessing their growth is awesome.
