Horizon UI kit and working with developers

Does the Horizon Figma UI kit have any corresponding plugin or benefit to developers other than acting as a visual model of communication between designers and developers?

How is Hoizon best used by developers?

Thank you for asking this question, it is a key topic that we hope to do some more training on in the future.

All the component and styles in the Next Experience libraries and the Employee Center libraries use the same naming conventions as the equivalent components in UI Builder, Theme Builder, Service Portal Page Designer, and Service Portal Branding Editor. For devs, that means they can use Figma's Dev Mode to inspect the layer's of your design and see:

  • the components you are using int he design that they have to modify or add to the canvas
  • the text and color styles you are changing in the Figma and the corresponding values they need to update on platform

To do this effectively, you need to use the power of Figma's styles and component variants to modify elements with the constraints we provide, not detach component and make arbitrary changes.

You also need to understand the configuration opportunities and constraints presented by the various frameworks. We recommend reviewing the App Framework content on the Horizon site to give you a good baseline of what's possible in each framework.

In addition, if you are a designer... get familiar with the Servicenow platform. Set up a personal developer instance (PDI) on the Developer Portal, take a couple courses on Now Learning, and feel competent in understanding what the platform can do.

Now Learning recommendations:

Hope this helps, and we'd love to hear more about your use of these libraries.
