Unable to Override “Parent” Reference Field on Task in Child Table

Hi everyone,

I have a custom table, Onboarding Task, that extends the Task table.

I am trying to change the reference of the inherited Parent field so that, for Onboarding Task only, it references the Employee Onboarding table.

My approach was to use a Dictionary Override on the Parent field (defined on Task). However, when creating the override record, I do not see an option to “Override reference”.

From what I understand, the Parent field on Task is a self-referencing field (Task → Task relationship), and it may not allow overriding the reference table.

My questions:

  1. Is it technically possible to override the reference table for the Parent field on a child table?

  2. If not, is the recommended approach to create a new custom reference field instead?

  3. Would this behavior change if the Employee Onboarding table also extends Task?

I want to make sure I am following the correct data modeling approach without impacting other Task-based tables.

Any clarification would be appreciated.

Thank you.
