How can I search the knowledge from the virtual agent without using the topic?

I would like the virtual agent to look for articles on the knowledge base based the sentence written by the end user. The virtual agent must display those articles without the use of a topic.

How can I do it?

Do you know if there's a way to search from the initial greeting to search both the knowledge base and service catalog without selecting a topic block? Similar to the self-service portal search?
