Can you use a zero copy table as a source in a field, like a reference field?

Wondering if we have an external source of data, like a customer table, can we link to that table using Zero Copy Data Fabric and just use that table as the source in a reference field?

In my mind, I don't think that would make sense as a reference field stores an object sys_id in the given table and a zero copy table lacks a sys id but I thought I should pose the question.

So far, the two ways to access data through the data fabric are using flows or scripts but I was wondering if there was a more interactive way to treat the row in the table as selectable, like you see in a reference or list field.
