Definition of a Direction Mode: It is used for Indoor Mapping application to define a mode of direction or means of transportation. It is employed to indicate how the user will get from point A to point B (e.g.  pedestrian, bike, truck, etc.), and also to inform whether the user has a disability and must use an accessible function.

At the instance level you already have two direction modes enabled by default, but you will be able to create extra modes depending on your organization’s needs. To create one, you must inform a name, an icon and an average speed

Direction modes are a feature of Indoor Mapping. In order to access this feature, your instance should be updated to the Rome family release or any other version after, and the following plugins must be installed Indoor Mapping and Workplace Indoor Mapping.

  1. Creating an icon

To create a direction mode, you must first go to your ServiceNow instance. In the left filter navigator, you have to search for the Indoor Mapping module and then select Icon.

From here, you can define your icon for your new direction mode. Note that your instance comes with a pre-existing icon library. If you want to edit an existing icon, select an icon record and apply your edits.

You can create a new one by clicking on NEW.

For the creation of your Icon, you will have to fill the NAME you want to see appearing in Map Studio as well as the TITLE under which you will download your icon in the form of PNG.

You do not have to worry about the size of your PNG, it will be automatically set to the right size and shape by the studio. Click on active (the icon must be active to appear in the studio and on your building and give meaning to your Direction Mode) and then you validate the creation of your icon by clicking on update.

Once your icon is created go back to the left-hand filter navigator to search for Direction Mode.

Definition of an icon: It is used to design your POIs (points of interest) and define what you see on your map. Icons are also used to style your Place Types and make them visible on your map.

  1. Creating a direction mode

In your instance, use the left filter navigator to search for direction modes, where you will find the pre-existing mode records.

Accessible: this mode is set for people with disabilities so by default stairs and escalators are inactive, while elevator and ramp are privileged.

Default: It is configured for simple pedestrians.

If you want to edit these existing modes, select the direction mode record and apply your edits.

It’s also here that you will be able to create your extra modes. You can create a new direction mode by clicking on NEW.

You will arrive on this page where you will have to fill in the parameters of your future Direction Mode.

You will have to fill the Name of the future Direction Mode and then add the Title. You can use the same text for Name and Title. The Title will be displayed on the studio when choosing the direction mode of a direction.

You must choose an icon in the list and indicate an average speed for the type of transportation used.

-Active: if you uncheck this box your direction mode will be automatically deactivated on your different maps. Note that turning off the direction mode does not remove it; it will just be made inactive on your map and there will be no more direction on the original way.
