Start by familiarizing yourself with Cloud Cost Management

Cloud Cost Management helps you manage cloud resources to reduce spend and minimize risk. It comes with many features that allow you to gain visibility into total cloud consumption across SaaS, IaaS, and PaaS—all in one place. You can get an high-level overview of Cloud Cost Management in this product page and datasheet. Below are the key features to keep in mind:

  • Cloud spend dashboard: Track hybrid cloud spending in one place, including SaaS, IaaS, and PaaS, and cut cloud costs.
  • Cloud spend analytics: Generate cloud spend, trend, and forecast reports and adjust to improve spending—automatically.
  • Rightsizing resources: Monitor and analyze resource provisioning and usage levels and adjust sizes to reduce waste.
  • Business hours: Identify, report, and make changes to resources that are running when they should be powered off.

You can learn more about the key features of Cloud Cost Management and its basic configurations in this on-demand course. If you are new to ServiceNow, we also strongly recommend that you take this very short Get Started with the Now Platform course to learn platform basics. If you want a deeper dive into using the Now Platform, a longer ServiceNow Fundamentals course is also available.

Benefits of Cloud Cost Management:

  • Consolidate IT and cloud management: Workflow the tasks that control cloud costs with system-driven savings recommendations.

  • Reduce cloud costs: Gain complete visibility into your total public cloud spend and take steps to prevent cloud waste.

  • Automate and streamline: Reduce manual processes by automating cloud tasks—all the way from provisioning to retirement.

Identify your desired business outcomes

Before you start to implement Cloud Cost Management, it’s critical to have a clear vision of what you want to accomplish. These products allow you to deliver many positive business outcomes, and you can achieve all of this over time. However, by deciding which outcomes are most important for your organization and agreeing on them with your stakeholders, you can set clear expectations and tailor your initial implementation to realize these goals.

One of the most frequent business outcomes that Cloud Cost Management customers target is cost reporting. With Cloud Cost Management, you can gain visibility into your organization's cloud spend and track it over time. You can also assign cloud costs to specific teams, departments, or projects to better understand where your cloud budget is going, and set thresholds for cloud spend and receive alerts when spending exceeds these limits.

Another important business outcome for Cloud Cost Management customers is cost optimization. With Cloud Cost Management, you can identify unused, underused, or misconfigured cloud resources that are causing unnecessary costs. You can take action on cloud waste by rightsizing instances, terminating unused resources, or optimizing resource configurations. You can also understand which teams, departments, or individuals are responsible for cloud waste and take action to address the root cause.

Finally, Cloud Cost Management can help you achieve savings automation. You can define rules and policies to automate cost-saving tasks, such as rightsizing or terminating resources. You can keep track of recommended cost-saving actions and track their impact on your cloud spend. You can also implement change control procedures to ensure that cost-saving actions are properly reviewed and approved before being executed.

Keep in mind that you can achieve all of these outcomes over time. However, by prioritizing one outcome first, you focus your efforts and avoid overextending your team. Also remember that your stakeholders need to be part of your journey, and that you also need an executive sponsor to create alignment and ensure accountability.
