Best practice to discover Cisco IP phones

Hello,
what is the state of the art (and most efficient) way to discover Cisco IP phones?
We did not find much useful info on this topic so far. Options I see:

- connecting to call managers (how?)

- running normal discovery - do we need custom patterns, credentials etc?

- manual export from call manager, import in ServiceNow
