Cloud Discovery

Hi Everyone,

I am preparing for a client interview where the primary focus is on Azure and GCP Cloud Discovery. I have a basic understanding of Azure discovery, including the use of Service Principals, service accounts, and subscription-level discovery.
I would like to understand what areas interviewers usually focus on, especially the common troubleshooting scenarios and questions related to Azure and GCP Cloud Discovery, so I can prepare effectively.

Can anyone please assist me.

Thanks

Hi!

It sounds like you already have a solid start with Azure discovery concepts, which is great. 🙂

For interviews focused on Azure and GCP Cloud Discovery, here’s what you can expect and prepare for:

1. Core concepts

  • Azure: Service Principals, service accounts, subscription vs resource group level discovery, role-based access, and authentication permissions.

  • GCP: Service accounts, IAM roles, project-level and organization-level discovery, API permissions, and scopes.

  • Discovery tools: How ServiceNow Discovery or similar tools connect to cloud accounts and gather asset information.

2. Common troubleshooting scenarios

Interviewers often ask about situations like:

  • Discovery failing due to insufficient permissions

  • Missing or incomplete inventory data from subscriptions/projects

  • Timeout issues or API limits being hit

  • Handling multiple subscriptions/projects or cross-cloud discovery

  • Network/firewall or endpoint issues preventing cloud connection

3. Example questions you might face

  • How would you configure a Service Principal in Azure for Discovery?

  • How do you troubleshoot when Discovery shows partial data or fails?

  • Differences in how Azure and GCP handle service accounts and permissions for Discovery.

  • How do you handle multi-cloud environments in Discovery?

  • Security considerations when connecting Discovery to cloud accounts.

4. Prep tips

  • Be ready to walk through step-by-step setup of a cloud account for discovery.

  • Review logs and common error messages, and think about how you’d troubleshoot them.

  • Understand differences between Azure and GCP, especially around authentication and permissions.

Basically, interviewers want to see that you know the setup, can troubleshoot, and understand cloud permissions and roles that i have seen.
