CMDB CIs Status

Hello All,

Am searching for some valid inputs on the CMDB CI status with respect to the below fields :

-Operational Status

-Install Status

-Life Cycle Stage

-Life Cycle Stage Status

i need to understand , what is the OOTB logic(reference scripts,BRs..etc) used within CMDB where the CI gets a particular Operational or Install Status (based on discovered CIs'), i am searching for definitions related to each state of Operational/Install Status on CIs, if someone has a valid reference (as i could not find them in docs), would really be helpful.

Thanks

Operational Status: Operational status indicates the current state or condition of a configuration item. It provides information about whether a CI is operational or non-operational. It can have values such as "Operational," "Non-operational," "In Maintenance," or "Retired." This status helps track the availability and functionality of CIs within the IT infrastructure.

Install Status: Install status refers to the installation state of a configuration item. It indicates whether a CI has been installed, is pending installation, or requires reinstallation. Common values for install status can include "Installed," "Pending Installation," or "Reinstallation Required." This status helps in managing the deployment and installation process of CIs.

Life Cycle Stage: The life cycle stage represents the phase of a configuration item's life cycle. It identifies where a CI is in its overall life cycle, which typically includes stages like planning, design, development, testing, deployment, operations, and retirement. The life cycle stage provides a high-level view of the CI's progression from creation to retirement.

Life Cycle Stage Status in ServiceNow CMDB: The life cycle stage status in ServiceNow CMDB provides more granular information about the specific status or progress within a particular life cycle stage. It helps track the completion or current status of tasks or activities associated with each stage. The status values in this context may vary based on the specific implementation or customization within your organization.

So when you see something in CMDB stale you should check what its operational status is.

When you see a change on CI is planned you should refer to the install status.

Thanks Pratiksha for your response, it certainly helps me to get an overview on the definitions, however it would be more helpful for me if you can share me the reference of your definitions, any docs, community article or OOTB Business Rules..etc within system so that i can dig deeper for further details.

Thanks again for your answer..!!!

Is there a way to consult these definitions such as: Operational, Non-Operational, Retired, In Maintenance, Ready, In DR Wait? We're preparing a document wich needs these definitions, but we need a valid source. For example: ServiceNow. Thanks in advance for any support.

Only use Install Status. That is the only status Finance is going to care about. Finance doesn't only care if something is operational or non-operational. They care if it is on the books, what the CMDB Status is and what the depreciating cost of the device is that the CMDB record represents.

If you don't know it by now, Finance and Security are your biggest most valued partners, if you're using ServiceNow to perform Configuration Management. They can help you ensure everyone is following processes. And everyone listens to them. If you get them on your side you will have a much easier time getting everyone else on your side.
