Hello all
We are proposing an architecture where the CMDB, Discovery, and Hardware Asset Management (HAM) remain in ServiceNow, while Jira Service Management (JSM) continues to be used as the operational ITSM platform.
JSM would consume CI data from the ServiceNow CMDB for Incident, Change, and Request Management processes. The customer plans to implement ServiceNow ITSM within the next 1–2 years, making this an interim-state architecture.
Has anyone implemented a similar model? Are there any technical, operational, licensing, or data synchronization challenges we should be aware of?
Additionally, as CMDB, Discovery, and HAM are platform capabilities within ServiceNow, can these modules operate effectively without ServiceNow ITSM being the primary ITSM tool? Have you encountered any limitations or dependencies when using Discovery and HAM while another platform (such as Jira JSM) manages day-to-day ITSM operations?
Any recommendations, lessons learned, or best practices would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, this architecture is supported and fairly common during transition programs.
ServiceNow best practices:
- CMDB, Discovery, and HAM can operate independently of ServiceNow ITSM.
- Discovery can populate and maintain the CMDB without Incident, Change, or Request Management running in ServiceNow.
- HAM can manage assets using CMDB and asset data without ServiceNow ITSM as the primary service desk.

Challenges typically involve->
- CI synchronization and data ownership
- Maintaining a single source of truth
