Hi everyone,
I’m new to ServiceNow and practicing in a Personal Developer Instance (PDI).
What I did
- Created a user in User Administration > Users
- Assigned roles (e.g., itil) directly on the user record
What I’m confused about
- Is it better practice to assign roles through groups instead of directly to users?
- How do I check what roles a user has inherited vs. assigned directly?
- What is the safest way to give a new user ITIL access without extra permissions?
Any tips or best practices from real projects would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hi @gunasair79
Best ractice is to put users into groups and assign roles through groups. According to what inherited vs. assigned directly, you will on the user record related list for roles see below:
According to safest way, then I would have a dedicated group for ITIL access and then add users into that group.
If my answer has helped with your question, please mark my answer as the accepted solution and give a thumbs up.
